It’s no secret that I love to crochet. Crochet has brought me a lot of joy and peace and calm. It’s so rewarding to create something with your own hands. I’ve made more scarves and hats than I can count and I’ve made tons of blankets–I hope they bless not just my home, but my wider family as well.
So of course I want you to learn to crochet. However, I have some reasons I hope you’ll find compelling why every homemaker should learn to crochet.
Homemakers Should Crochet for Self Care
Crochet is great self care. Having a hobby is so important, it’s something you do for you. It’s time you take to invest in yourself, and that is important. The Lord doesn’t intend us to be drudges. He calls us to serve yes, but not to be doormats or to work ourselves to illness through service. So taking time to do something enjoyable is so very important. And crochet’s repetitive motions really do help regulate the nervous system and calm your mind and body.
Homemakers are busy people. Homemakers care for the house, care for those who live in the house, manage schedules and this kind of work requires organizational skills, juggling and lots of patience and love. It also requires a lot of time and attention. So homemakers are just not women who stay at all home all day doing very little. Therefore, homemakers need that self care time.
Homemakers Should Crochet to Create for Loved Ones
You can crochet all sorts of things for your loved ones with crochet. Baby blankets and plushies, warm hats and scarves. It’s especially fun to crochet fun projects for your little ones–I’ve made hats and Halloween costumes, blankets and plushies and my son is beginning to realize that Mommy can make anything.
While crocheting for the littles is adorable and obviously rewarding, it’s also wonderful to create for others in your family. Blankets I’ve made are in the homes of my wider family, each of my nephews has a scarf I worked up to add to a Christmas gift one year.
Crocheting for your loved ones is a wonderful thing as the things you make can bless them and their homes, and can become heirloom pieces passed down through the family. I have seen many who cherish handmade items made by their grandmothers and aunts, items that are unique to the family home, items made with love and personally I think it’s wonderful that we can make pieces that our loved ones will use and cherish for years to come.
So this is one special reason homemakers should crochet.
Homemakers Should Crochet to Create for the Home
Another reason that homemakers should learn to crochet is in order to make things for the home. Something I’ve always loved to make are blankets. Blankets are wonderful as everyone in the family can use them and can become staple pieces in your decor as well. They can become heirloom pieces, pieces that your grandchildren treasure.

But you can also make practical items for your home. Things like dishcloths, coasters, hot pads and even cushion covers. These are practical and can be used over and over again. In a world where many homes are starting to look startlingly similar, these little personal touches make a home your own.
Homemakers Should Crochet to Create Wearables
You can crochet sweaters and cardigans as well as hats and scarves! While crochet definitely gives a garment a different sort of feel than what we are used to from mass produced items due to the fabric of mass produced clothing being made with a knit weave, making your own wearables is very practical and rewarding.
And making your own clothing, whether you crochet or knit it, is really rewarding and you often get a better fit than you might with some mass produced items. Plus, you can really reflect your own style with items you make yourself.
Creating a whole sweater or tee or cardigan might sound very difficult, but with time and patience and practice you’ll realize that crocheting your own wearable pieces only seems impossible and that really, everyone can do it.
Homemakers Should Crochet Because It’s Fun
In the end, I recommend that every homemaker should learn to crochet because it is so much fun! It’s a fun hobby, one that can provide for and bless your family, as well as a skill you can pass down to your children or grandchildren. Children need parents to model fun as well as acceptable behaviour and manners and they come to see things as fun if parents are engaged in an activity. If dads play sports, kids play sports. If moms bake, kids demonstrate an interest in baking. If parents only engage in screen time, kids are likely to only want to be on devices. The more hobbies we have that are varied, the more we model to our children that fun can be found in so many places. Working with our hands, whether it’s wood working, painting or crocheting can be fun. For kids, and for adults.
